Aren't they adorable? On Sunday I went to a fund raiser at Cotuit Center for Arts. The absolutely beautiful building has cathedral ceilings, natural lighting, and lovely art on the walls. How could you not be excited to create something here! Sorry - I don't have photos without other people in them, so won't post them here. But, click on the link above and it will bring you to their website.

Either side of the room had long, empty tables for you to create your masterpiece(s). Most people made very large arrangements - I go for the cutesy. 2 long tables had all sorts of containers that the organizer collected through-out the year. Each container was filled with florist foam - already wet. Some containers she ever spray painted, or otherwise jazzed up. So, first stop was container. The middle of the room had long tables with all sorts of freshly cut greens. Lots of variety! Then, the organizer had spray painted various pinecones or dipped them into glitter, glued Christmas balls onto straws, little ornaments onto shish-ka-bob sticks (spray painted dark green), fake flowers, glittery bits and pieces, bows, more ornaments, bare branches spray painted white, etc. Clippers were provided so you could cut your greenery to size.

Go to the middle tables - pick your stuff. Go to your container and arrange. Scrutinize. Go back to middle tables and get more stuff. Add some more. Walk around and talk with everyone else and admire their arrangement. Back to yours for any finishing touches. Then - you could have your arrangement misted with floral spray to help it "keep" longer. Keep in mind - mostly fresh greens, so they do need to be watered daily.

That was my fund raiser day on Sunday. Very fun. It is a clever idea for someone who is organized as a fund raiser. I know she spent alot of time collecting everything - throughout the year. You would be amazed at prices of baskets and containers at yard sales, thrift stores, etc. Put out a message that you are collecting them and they appear on your doorstop. Dollar Store decorations glued to sticks and straws. Clippers. LOTS of fresh greens. Well - you get the idea. I know it was very time consuming on the organizers part, but at the end - everyone was very happy with their arrangement and it was a good fund raiser for the Center.

I went with my sister and she brought her own container - our 3 arrangements are pictured below.

Do you make your own arrangements? My Mom always loved her beanpot - more so than the Christmas tree, I think. In December she would fill it with freshly cut greens and put a little string of white lights on it. And that was that - done! Things don't have to be stressful!

Evelyn aka Starfishyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12025353776081066815noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18538999.post-83004742372447806982019-10-03T02:58:00.000-04:002019-10-03T02:58:24.473-04:00Some Fall Knitting

Yes, my son is a teen now...taller than me! BUT...he is not quite old enough for a driver's license. So, I try to keep my car knitting handy. I do not always knit while waiting. Sometimes I just rest, and that is ok! Maybe I will watch a You Tube video or color in one of my fancy coloring books, or journal. It depends on my mood and how long he will be.

Right now I am working on this beautiful cowl of deep cranberries mixed with teals and greens. It is so soft and squishy! There are only 12 more rows to go. The weather forecast is gray and drizzle, so maybe I will get to finish it this week if I bring it inside. Then I will have to put a different knitting project in the car.

This cowl matches the fuzzy maroon jacket that I am wearing. I am also wearing a beautiful scarf from my sister-in-law, who is a very skilled knitter. When the natural lighting is better, this precious knitted gift deserves a few photos! I wore it often through chemo and it is still a firm favorite. It is May, but feels more like March here. I have not moved my cozy items from the front of the line yet!
Took me forever to figure out my password when Blogger changed to Google sign ins and at the time I did not have a Google email. Cancelled phone numbers, forgotten passwords, a new device. I mean, we are talking almost 2 years here. It was just impossible to get back into the system. But I was finally successful tonight. Yay! Because I have missed you all. Big hugs.

It is ok. I had other things on my mind. Stage 3 cancer that went to Stage 4. I was not supposed to loose my hair on that 2nd round of chemo, but I did.

I got the "chemo cut" when my long hair started coming out in gobs.

Which went to this. 2nd round of chemo, which was Folfox in a lovely little port that never let me down from September 2017 to April 2018. Not so great in the winter because it makes you extremely sensitive to the cold. I mean, so bad you can not even bare eating ice cream. So it has been 1 year since chemo.

All selfies.

The radiation, chemo operation thing. Another emergency surgery. Infection. Liver failure due to strong antibiotics. 53 days in the hospital for round 1, no kidding. Pretty much off internet/tv because the screens hurt my eyes. Besides, I do not want to read sympathy, or "how are you?" because I was sick. And I certainly did not to hear for me to go to India, stand on my head and drink yaks' milk for a sure cure. Definitely off social media, which is how I forgot to get into everything at this time. Rectal cancer which is getting more and more common in younger ages. I have no more rectum, I am missing parts of my colon and a slice out of my lungs, but serious digestive issues, which makes me weak. I tire easily and it is hard to gain weight.

Less than a year later I have a Met to my lung. VAT surgery at Mass General, which was HARD to recover from. Fortunately, my son and I are now living with my sister and she has a stair master because she is an amputee. My niece flew in that summer to help with the taking care of, taxi driving and feeding of my son, so I can rest. I have lots of family support.

Seriously, I wish I would have known I would be so sick. I went to University full time for that semester and worked part time. And continued to loose weight at an alarming rate so by Thankgiving I was under 100 pounds and could not hold my head up at night. Who knew we had such heavy heads? But, I am finally coming back. Figuring out how to log into this account only proves it. I am so excited.

But, I am really here. I am coming back with the ups, the downs, precious moments in life. I have recorded so much and need to figure out YouTube. I have fun places I have gone, fun things I have made. Plans. I have so much to share!

But for now, I just wanted to say hi. I am leaving you with a fun picture of Irene and me walking the dogs, Tootsie and Lola in October on an unusually nice day! Irene and her husband have been instrumental in my care while also helping me with my teenaged son. Send them some love! Xo I am holding Toots and Irene has Lola.

Hand knit boot socks (far left). Hand knit hiking socks (middle pair). Kroy yarn socks (4th pair in...purple stripes).

I am pretty sure all these socks were knit from sock yarn I buy at the grocery store in Austria. It is a bit thinner than Kroy and Regis.

Hand knit socks using 2 yarns to create stripes (far right pair). Left pair is Regis, matching stripping yarn. I think the gray/red pair was Kroy yarn.

Can you believe I still do not have a computer? Blogging on my phone, typing with 1 finger just does not interest me. Sorry! But I am still here!

A few weeks ago I was sorting through my hand knit socks and took the above photos. And now my phone is too fill of photos to let me edit, to rotate the photos. Oh well, turn your head sideways! There are a few pairs not in the photos. The pair with cream colored cuffs, my friend Ava knit for me. Yarns range from 4, 6 and 8 ply...mostly regular sock yarn. That 6 ply is great for hiking socks.

So, just a quick post to say hi to everyone! Stick with me...I hope to have a computer within a few months!

I hope you are all well and happy!Evelyn aka Starfishyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12025353776081066815noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18538999.post-12371405445677594752016-09-24T23:28:00.000-04:002016-09-24T23:28:08.148-04:00Secret Sock Knitting

On Monday I was at the hospital for blood work, etc. and the receptionist was apologetic that the wait would be long. First, you must stick around in the waiting room until your name is called for bloodwork. After your blood is drawn you can leave for an hour while the lab does their work. And then you need to come back and wait to see the DR. I just plan for 3 hours and if I get out earlier it is a bonus.

The receptionist smiled when I smiled, said I did not mind...I had some new sock yarn with me and would knit! A little smile can go a long way. Certainly not her fault the wait was longer than usual. Who knows...maybe someone was sick who works in the lab. So...I cast on and knit away. After the blood draw, I moved out to the lobby, which is quite pleasant and got a cappuccino from the coffee machine. I also wandered around the little garden a bit and took in the fall landscape.

Lots of knitting this week because DR orders for lots of rest. My blood is still not all that great. I am good, energy wise for about 4 hours and then I need a big rest before my 2nd wind comes around. I really can NOT get sick and admitted to the hospital these next 2 weeks because my husband had his knee replaced on Thursday and will be in the hospital for about 10 days total. Only 1 adult at a time can be down for the count around here! I have to go back on Monday and hopefully things will be a bit improved.

Anyway, I almost always cast on 60 because I have a narrow leg. Size 2.75mm needles...I can not find my favorite 2.25mm needles. Will have to order a pair, or 2 or 3! The mm sizes are a bit more finely tuned than US sizes because a US 2 seems to span 2.25mm-2.75mm. This is Regia Pair perfect yarn and as you can see...you get plenty of yarn! I knit an 8" cuff and knit 7.5" before starting a rounded toe. The "starter" yarn is yellow...you pull that until the color starts. Knit until the 2 narrow stripes and divide for heel. Normally I knit a 6" cuff, but waiting for the color stripe it worked up to 8". When your sock is finished - keep pulling the yarn until you get to the next yellow starter. Then you get 2 socks that match perfectly.

Why do I say secret sock knitting? Because my son was appalled when I was sitting on the couch knitting away on a new sock, when I have my Drachenfels scarf coming along so nicely! So, I was "secretly " working on this sock when he was at school this week!

Looking like this last time I took a photo. I did need both balls of all colors, but just a small bit of gray and not all that much of black. I know I will have blue left over too. All probably destined to become baby booties.

Podcast news! My son and I have been very silly playing around with the new tripod and video camera on my phone. We make ourselves laugh! I love taking photos, but I have never really been a video person. I always think videos take up too much space, I guess. Last Sunday I did manage to get the ball rolling, out on my lovely, albeit small balcony.

Except there is a bit of traffic noise that drowns me out. I thought maybe I did not need a little microphone, but maybe I do. There are good parts though, so either today or tomorrow or maybe even Tuesday since I need to be at the hospital on Monday and then I will be too tired to do anything else - I will re-record some of it, delete the poor sound quality bits and join it all together. I may well be the only Podcaster who takes over 2 weeks to put together a simple video, but as my Mom used to say, " slow and steady wins the race".

On a final note...my Dad turned 89 this week. Here is a photo of us together when I was 16. I am a bit homesick because I never made it home this summer so it has been over a year. Although my sister Irene was here in February, which was nice. My sister Sarah was planning on coming over these weeks, but she is sick and had to cancel her flights. Then there was talk if I should try making the trip these September days before my school starts, but I am still not well enough for international travel and it was a small window of time because of my husband's surgery. Maybe after Christmas day when my son and I both have vacation and he can come with me to help. So, we will see.

OK! So, that all was a bit more than just my "secret" socks, but now that if is all typed...with 1 finger on my phone, I am NOT deleting it!

Drachenfels Shawl Pattern

I wasn't sure what size needles to use because the pattern calls for sport weight yarn and I bought Superfein (about sock weight, I would say). The yarn is Lana Grossa Cool Wool Baby Merino Superfein. I bought it last week on Wednesday at Pingouin Wollboutique in Vienna. What a charming little shop, just chock a block full! We even got a parking spot right out front. I am going back on Monday and am making a little wish list.

So, thinner yarn - bigger needles. The pattern calls for USA 6 (4mm) so I decided to swatch on USA (5 mm). That guage looked correct...I just did not care for the looseness. It is me. I think a tighter gauge looks more elegant.

4 mm (USA6). Just about 1 row too short...but it is a scarf, not a fitted sweater! Really, for a scarf, I think that gauge is perfect! Mainly because I already have these needles. I like Susan Bates because the points are sharp. This is a funny pair in that 1 needle is pointier than the other. So, I made sure to set it up that the pointy needle would get the knitting the requires making extra stitches, etc.

So, there you have it. I am using the recommended needles even though I am pretty sure my yarn is thinner. It is so light weight and drapey and SOFT!

After only about 6 inches, I really thought the edge would have a tight curl. I don't mind 6" on each side curling, but this scarf is going to be about 83" (210cm). So, I started added a yarn over after the first stitch and dropping it on the way back. Also, give that 1st stitch a little slack.

I added stitch markers at the end to remind me - hey! You need to do something here! It is such an easy knit, knit, knit pattern that my brain forgets to remind me there is a change. Hence the stitch marker.

Swatch on Saturday. Cast on Sunday. Today is Wednesday and this is how far I am now. So, it is a pretty quick knit so far.
I set up an Instagram page today to show photos. I am not really into technology, but want to try doing some Podcasts, so thought an Instagram accounxt would be needed. I am Scrappyhappystarfishy. My 13 year old son spent a few happy hours on Amazon this week and ordered me a simple tripod and a few other gadgets to get me going. So, it is something we are currently working on together. Hopefully everything will arrive in a few days and we can give it a go!

Note: Not sure, but maybe my Instagram name is Starfishyknits? I tried to change it and it looks like it changed in one field, but not the other. Not really sure how it all works. Maybe I have to delete and start over?!

And...a photo of an old car we saw downtown today.
Slightly thicker sock yarn. Cast on 60 with USA size 3 needles and then switched to USA size 2 needles at the first row. I like using the bigger needle to start...easier to pick up that 1st row and keeps it from drawing up. Anyway, perfect socks for hiking shoes, rain or snow boots. I prefer thinner socks for my everyday walking shoes. Always good to have options and a variety!

The stripes match! Just the last wee bit of 1 toe has 1 row of blue at the end.
Lots of yarn left over! I like to make baby booties with left over sock yarn, but lately I have been thinking about starting one of those scrappy sock yarn blankets.

And a sneak peak at my next project...not socks! Drachenfels shawl! The blue is variagated. I bought 2 balls of each color. I am so looking forward to casting on tomorrow... but first I really felt like I had to motivate myself to finish the socks since they were so close to being done. Drachenfels pattern link here! A Raveley group JUST had a Knit Along on this all month. It ends in a few days. I think it is a fun pattern for a KAL.

I took this knitting selfie this morning... I just knew if I cast on Drachenfels this poor, almost finished sock would languish. So, I knit off and on, here and there today and finished it up. I mean really, I was almost to the toe decreases and you know how fast the rows go clicking by once you start decreasing. And I still kept putting it down for 1 reason or another!
It was hot tonight. This is what I made for dinner. A mixture of arugula, macaroni, stewed tomatoes, tomato juice, sautéed garlic, fresh basil, mozerella cheese balls, parmesian cheese... yummy. My grandpa grew lots of tomatoes and this time of year my Nana often made something simular. She skipped the salad, added more cheese, topped with bread crumbs and baked. So, different, but still reminds me of my dear, sweet Nana cooking away in her old fashioned farm kitchen...complete with a 12 burner cast iron cook stove.
I live on the 6th floor. The bees like my flower boxes. Mostly I have herbs and let some flower so the bees have food too. I have enough to share! They are so busy - way up here above the street.
But I know the season of summer flowers is drawing to a close. Mother Nature's calendar told me so the other day. The hibiscus are in bloom and they are some of the last flowers to make an appearance every summer. Worth the wait...but when you see them - you know fall is right around the corner.

I cast on new socks. You knew I would, right? It is 6 ply so slightly thicker than the sock yarn I usually use. But the yarn is soft and lovely and I am really enjoying it. Steinbach Wolle Aktiv Proto 6-Fach. I think they probably will be perfect for wearing around the house in the winter or with rain or winter boots. Maybe a bit too thick with my normal shoes...which in the interest of comfort are usually good quality running sneakers.

Usually I cast on and do the rib. Next time I knit - down to the heel if I have time or the attention span. The heel AND heel turn always together...otherwise I forget about the turn and try to pick up the gusset stitches. Goof ball! How many pairs of socks have I knit? Gusset in 1 sitting. Then it is just simple knitting to the toe. So...now I am at the simple foot knitting...maybe tomorrow.

I had a little bird get into the house yesterday. I opened more windows and happily he found his way out after a few attempts. He is small so you have to look closely.
Mostly I have been watching the Olympics. The coverage in Austria has been really good with lots of events. Entertaining and I can knit at the same time. Or I have been napping. One nice thing about being home from the hospital is uninterrupted sleep. My husband has been doing a good job cooking...I only have to get myself to the table. Not that I have a huge appetite, but he is trying to come up with a variety of tempting entrees. Slowly starting to feel better, so thank you for all the well wishes.
Finished! Just have to weave in the toe ends. The yarn matched perfectly until right before the heel, seemed to match again...and then was off for the toes.

I got home from the hospital today. I was there another 9 days. I guess these are my hospital socks...The color even matched the hospital decor. They were so close to being done and 1 day my IV failed and I didn't need another for a few hours so I asked the nurse to leave it off so I could finish my sock! My DH took this photo of them for me when I was sick in bed. Ha, ha...this is his version of a close up. That guy cracks me up! I said "over by the flowers" (natural light) and I guess he understood that I wanted the flowers in the photo. Nice flowers though!

I am happy, happy to be home. My son's cacti have grown and some have flowers! I took these photos to send him - he likes his cacti so much! I miss him, but he is doing good.
I have new sock yarn and probably will cast on this weekend. But I am not sure. I am thinking I would enjoy something different a change. Any ideas? Maybe a pillow out of thicker yarn, or some type of cheerful garland, or???

But you know I will start the socks. As much as I stew about stripping yarn not matching, it is still my favorite. Look at these pretty colors! And nothing wrong with having more than 1 project on the needles!

Almost done with the 2nd sock. You can see the 3rd repeat down of blue/green is not identical, but there was a bit extra of the lighter color above - so the sock pattern still matches up. Another 2 sit down to knit times and it should be done! I really have not done much knitting - or much of anything for that matter, because I have been so sick.

I don't know why people think you have lots of time to read or knit when you are sick. I mostly sleep. The nurses always seem to be waking me up for something. Just when I fall into a deep sleep. So, I guess I take a lot of cat naps instead. Kind of hard to knit when your arm is full of IV's anyway.

OK, I tried one day...but it was not comfortable! Both the top of the hand and the elbow. Can't knit without bending that elbow.

But I like to THINK about knitting, look at patterns, and visit Blogs to see what everyone else is knitting. That is all less strenuous than actually knitting, ha! So, that is what I did to amuse myself. Or take photos of various flowers!
Wow! I was so sick I could not even pick my head up off the pillow some days. First I had a serious infection that needed IV antibiotics. Then I had another operation (3rd one in 5 weeks, but hopefully that is it!). And finally, after 16 days in the hospital, the DR said I could go home. That is 34 days since June 15, ugh! Let me tell you, it is so very nice to be home! I am still moving slowly, but at least I am home!

I miss my boy, but he calls most days for a few minutes when he wakes up. You know 13 year old boys...not exactly chatterboxes! He even sent some photos of fishing flies that he is tying - here is a photo of one. He loves fishing. He is doing great! I am so thankful that he is having a fun summer.
Well, this sock is where I left off on Saturday. I got to say, I love this yarn and look forward to knitting some more socks with it. Usually I use different needles (Prym size 2.5mm) but this yarn is slightly thicker so I really had to dig for 2.75mm needles, hence the Susan Bates brand. Actually, they are not as bad as I thought they would be. Not sure why I thought they would be bad in the first place!

No progress because I was re-admitted into the hospital on Monday and have been here ever since. Sick! Have not even left my room except for various tests and procedures.

Finally, I feel a little better today. Maybe, just maybe I will work on them in the next day or two. For now, it seems to be enough for me to just look at them, ha ha!

I asked my husband to please bring me my small tape measure. Well, he could not find it and instead brought me one of my spare quilt measuring tapes. Do you think 120 inches/300 cm is enough to measure a sock? I laughed!
And Schoolboy? I did what was hard for me, but the best thing for him...sent him to my family in the USA for a summer filled with aunts, uncles, cousins, beaches, swimming, fishing, bike riding, camping, cook-outs...All the fun things about summer vacation when you are a child. He has arrived and from all reports is having a great time! So, he gets to play and I get to rest.

Here is a photo from last summer of a fabulous Cape Cod beach. I sure hope I make it before the summer is over, so fingers crossed!
The socks I started in March. It is July. I tend to somehow finish a pair every 4-6 weeks. So for me not to finish a pair of socks for 4 months...yes, I have been sick. And going to school. Instead of sitting at the table and knitting while my son does his homework...and helping him as needed...I was also doing homework this winter. Homework sure takes a bite out of knitting time!

Anyway, a few days before leaving the hospital, I picked up the 2nd sock and started knitting. I did get released a week ago on Sunday...an 18 day stay. Other than going to my house DR on Monday for a follow up, I did not much more than sleep the first 2 days home. I am very slowly starting to feel better. Thank you for all the well wishes!

I happily finished them off yesterday. Even feeling good enough to sit out on the balcony with my husband for short periods of time.

I always knit with my glasses on my head! For knitting, I see better without my glasses! Ignore the bruises on my legs...They are from nightly shots that I need for a few more days.

BUT...do you see what I see? I was looking at the stripe pattern...comparing it to the other sock...and when I got to the end color, I just assumed I was finished. Made the toe. And today, I look at them and think...Gee - one looks shorter than the other! Yup, I stopped 3 bands of color short! Got to undo that toe, pick up the yarn and knit those 3 bands. My poor brain can not even seem to compute simple socks!

I was digging through my knitting bag and found these perfectly lovely gray socks! Absolutely no recollection of knitting them! Those stripes match perfectly, it just doesn't look like they do in the photo.

I am thinking January? I remember thinking it would be fun to knit socks in "seasonal" colors. And January is gray and snowy!

My February socks had a touch of red for Valentine's and dark colors for the long dark nights.
Light green for all the budding new leaves of spring...should be April's theme color. Well, we will just have to see how the year plays out. Will I have 12 pairs/monthly color...or combine a few months into one seasonal color? Either way, it does keep me entertained!
I have been sick for most of the winter. Right now I enjoy sitting outside in the hospital garden for bits of time. My son pushes me around some and then I give him my camera/phone and he runs around and takes photos of all the flowers for me. He has such a good eye! I like having a "flower album" on my phone. Gives me something pretty to look at!
My sister and niece mailed me a "Happy Camper" t-shirt from the USA. I was wearing it and sitting up in bed today when my surgeon came by to visit. He thinks I might be able to go home this weekend. Yeah! So please think happy, healing thoughts for me so I can get home quickly! Thank you!
We usually take a short vacation in May because my son has a few 4 day weekends from school. It is a bit off season, so not so much traffic, not so many people (I hate crowds), and off-season rates. Um, not always the best weather, but my son and I actually don't mind too much and DH is generally happy as long as we are happy.
This year we went to Croatia. I know that sounds exotic, but if you lived in Massachusetts, that would be similar to going to Rhode Island...less than 5 hours by car...but with border passport checks. We drove through Slovania to get there...as 3 country trip! It was after this trip that I realized my passport has room for only a few more stamps...so I have to take care of that soon.
My son played tennis every day... and I was happy to lounge and watch him have fun! I have been sick, so I especially planned this trip around him playing tennis so he would get lots of exercise and I would get lots of rest. The hotel even had a buffet breakfast and supper plan so I didn't even have to really cook, but we did have a kitchenette for snacks. It was the perfect family get away.

My son loves going for walks with me. I really love that about him. Rain, snow, fog, sun...If I say I want to go for a walk, he is ready. We have so many good talks on these walks. I really believe you must listen and converse about the little things, so that when big things come along...you are used to talking with each other. So, we walk...and talk. Even when I am tired, I try to get a walk into the schedule. The other day we went to the click tower...and usually we go up and down the stairs. But on this particular day, we paid a small fee to take the elevator up and then walked down.
We had fun checking out what flowers were in bloom and watching the salamanders scampering in the sun. You can buy a lamb cake at the grocery store for about 2€ here in Austria. But then you miss all the fun of licking spatulas and all that other fun stuff. This recipe is very good...It has 40 grams of cornstarch in it, an ingredient I never see in US cake recipes. I like this cake recipe and it makes the perfect sized cake for our little family of 3...served with strawberries and whipped cream! My husband thinks it is a bit funny that I have a cake pan that I use once a year, but isn't that the fun of holiday traditions?

A funny thing about recipes over here is that the measurements are given in weight. Even butter. So, you really do need a digital kitchen scale to weigh everything out...except the butter weights are on the wrapper, just like they are in the US, but over there I believe 1/4 and 1/2 cup measurements are indicated. Or something like that.
And yes, it takes a bit of time. And yes, it makes a bit of a mess. But we are doing something fun together and he is very proud that he makes the Easter dessert. We are making family traditions and happy memories. I have to involve him a little more in cooking because he likes it. I would rather cook together in the kitchen than have him watching endless TV (which he doesn't really do anyway, but you know what I am trying to say). Yesterday he was at a friend's house to play and he was so sad that all the kid wanted to do was take turns playing video games. For this past vacation week he went to a rock wall climbing class every day for 3 hours. He is happiest doing something!

And I am happy with my lovely bouquet of flowers! Whether you celebrate Easter or not, I hope you had a nice day!
February's socks...believe it or not, from the same dye lot. But 1 is slightly darker than the other. Size 0 needles so took me a little bit of time. Plus, I was wonderfully busy with my visiting sister for 2 weeks.

February, when it still gets dark early at night, maybe some patches of snow or frost and a little bit of red thrown in for Valentine's Day.
My husband's Mom is in her 90's and lives just over an hour away. She only likes to visit for 5, 10 minutes at the most. She lives in a nice Senior home, has a studio with a balcony with a view. She goes down to the dining room for meals, although the staff will bring her food up. And a nurse comes in to her room to dispense daily med.

On Sunday, we went to see her. We also combined the trip with a lunch invitation at DH'S brothers house. All in all, it was a pleasant visit and the perfect day for a drive out of the city.

The next day was slushy rainy ick. A good day to get a bit more knit on my current sock.

I hope you enjoy my pictures of the scenery. As you can see...very little snow for Austria, where the skiing season is usually pretty strong right into April.
Dale of Norway wool yarn. Knit on tiny needles. Tiny. Miles and miles of knitting around and around.
*
This was a shaped Nordic Ski sweater pattern that I got out of a magazine in 2002 or 2003. Before I started this sweater, I had knit maybe a few scarfs or something super easy when I was about 12? But I saw this pattern (in the magazine it was green), and just had to have it.
*
I ordered the yarn and needles on line and signed up for a beginner knitting course through the local adult ed catalog. Seriously. The poor teacher! But she taught me about going up 1 needle size for color work so it doesn't pull in and how to carry the colors along my fingers. Of course, my sweater was no where finished when the course ended. Besides the fact that I was pregnant with my son (who will be 13 in June), so I missed a few classes toward the end.
*
During the class I was also knitting him a lovely baby blanket that he dearly loved for years...and later asked me to make him one bed sized since he eventually outgrew it. Ummm, No! Anyway, my sister came over a few days before he was born and helped me finish the knit border around the edge. The sweater did not get finished.
*
Actually, the sweater got packed away and every once in a great while I would take it out and knit around and around on those knit rows. Finally, last February it was just a matter of finishing the 2nd sleeve and joining it altogether. So, I did.
*
And after 11 years, it was finished. Quick! I had my sister take a photo of me wearing it out on her deck! Don't you love her pine tree cut outs on her railing?

Funny to see me with dark hair. I do like dying my hair darker, but the gray streaks started showing through more often. So, I had to go back to my natural lighter color. Oh well! Now my sister and I have the same color of hair and everyone knows for sure we are related. She was here in Austria visiting me a few weeks ago. We had a great visit! That's her on the left, me on the right. We are the bookends of the family (the oldest and youngest) with 5 siblings between us!
One thing I really love...when a community pulls together for a cause. In Canada I lived in a small, rural area where most everyone chipped in for various causes and all knew each other. Whether to help the local school kids, fix feral cats, help someone with medical bills...whatever...donations were/are always generous. Hand knit items, home baked goods, flower arrangements, cords of wood, snow plowing, lobster, gift certificates...you name it.

I won this adorable hand-knit baby set in a community fund-raiser raffle. So I brought it to Austria full well knowing that babies are born all the time and it would make a nice gift for someone.

In January, I gave it to a classmate of mine for her newborn niece. My classmate, her brother and his wife are all from a very warm climate, living in Austria...far from family, their own language and culture. They are all learning German but it is a process. The gift was well received.

So, community supporting community...around the world.Evelyn aka Starfishyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12025353776081066815noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18538999.post-21417471097845678422016-01-26T12:03:00.000-05:002016-01-26T12:03:24.238-05:00Children's Group Art Project

My son is in the equivalent of 6th grade in the USA. He goes to a gymnasium, which means he is being schooled for the university route in Austria. 4th grade is a big deal over here because those report cards basically decide if you are university material, plus additional testing...and personal interviews. Stress. At the age of 10. At an older age you can try retesting again to get into a better school, BUT I really think those students are at a disadvantage by then and it is even harder at that point.

The system is that you can only apply to 1 school at a time. And yes, there is official government paperwork to keep track of it all. If your child does not get into the 1st choice of school, then it is a scramble to see what the availability is at other schools. And after that...well then, your neighborhood school is required to accept students from the neighborhood or the town officials assign a school based on remaining availability. This is basically my understanding of the whole process.

So, my son got into his 1st choice gymnasium and started last year This is year 2. They have a full schedule including lots of Math, German, Biology, Physics, Geometry, etc. It is normal for him to study 12 hours for a Math test. And English? I can have a full conversation with any of his classmates (age 12) and they hold their own...as a 2nd language. Next year they started French.

Hard core, right? No time for the Arts? Wrong! He still has several hours of gym EVERY week (thankfully). A big outdoor recess every day, plus a smaller pause. The German class is going to a children's production at the theater in a week or so. He has 3D Art where they make things with clay, wood, or sew.

And they still have drawing, painting Art. I am thankful for all of this because it gives his mind a break from stressfull studies and allows him to relax...and create.

His Art teacher told me that he gets very caught up on smaller details...I would say it is almost a form of meditation for him. He does not have to be the best artist to please the teacher. So no stress! She is looking for involvement and creativity.

Above is a photo of his water color, with details in fine line marker, that he brought back to school today. It is a group project because 2 other classmates will be adding their segments to the picture. Homework in Art!

I am a strong believer of keeping Arts in schools. I read more and more about schools cutting the Arts and I just do not agree! Art is just as important as any other subject. Keeping Art on the schedule does not hold my son's class back in any other subject. I would say they are all doing well. So fight to keep Art in schools!

The Art teacher gave them the picture below for inspiration.
