Checkerboard Log Cabin...

I forgot my Checkerboard Log Cabin on my October list. Here is the photo so far... I just need to a) add 1 more final red border or b) keep going? Currently it measures 72X72 and seems nice and flat. The checkerboard goes all the way around - I just have it draped across the top of my fence so you don't see the whole thing.

I keep wondering about growing it some more... I could easily add another 3" red strip and then a row of pinwheels and then finish it off with a final, narrow red border. This is the thing - I already have a few BIG log cabins so I was thinking I would like a little snuggle quilt - this will be backed in flannel. But, I am liking the design so much and thinking about pinwheels or flying geese, or both, or railfences, ... or, or, or... oh dear! Borders upon borders upon borders (was that me who said I didn't like to do borders?) Maybe I should just put the final red border on (cut 2") and pack it up and send it off to the long arm quilter (the binding will be red) and start a NEW one!!!

My recipe, so far:

The red squares are cut 3.5"
The strips are cut 2"
The unfinished block is 15.5" (15" when sewn together)
The red border is cut 3.5"
The checkerboards are more 2" strips

Go ahead - give it a try - I bet you can't stop at just one block.

I like it the way it is now - red binding on the checkerboard... or another red border & another scrappy border... (I guess it is not saying - end at a red border to me... - but it is your quilt & anything goes!)

It looks good already. THe extra borders would also look great but I am always hesitant about the quilting when a quilt gets too big. Do you have a longarm or do you have to wrestle in under your regular machine?

I like it just like it is. Unless you just want it bigger I'd probably just stop now and use red for the binding.

I love that checkerboard border! I like it the way it is, but if it's telling you it wants to keep growing, let it! You can't go wrong either way.

If you want it bigger, I'd be tempted to put a larger solid border next, maybe 5 or 6" and then bind. Of course, it look very good the way it is....

Hmmm, I was going to say I like it just the way it is, but then with a red binding. but you know.... flying geese around it would be really cool!

It's just beautiful, Evelyn! I'd vote for leaving it just as it is, with red binding. And I just love flannel backing...so cozy!

I vote for adding only a red border. I think that would finish it off beautifully. But I would definitely make it wider than 2". Wider would be in better proportions I think. I'd go for somewhere between 4" and 6". Maybe 5"? As long as you have enough red fabric.

I would agree that if you are going to add a border I'd go a little wider - Maybe 4 inches if the other one is 2. I also think I would go darker rather than another red - maybe blue - then the red is more of an accent.

Whatever you decide I'm sure it will look great - I love log cabin quilts!

Evelyn I am finally catching up to you!! you have been busy! I love the ocean waves it is really beautiful. Your story about Elmo reminds me of when my son (now 20)carried a little stuffed dog called appropriately "PUPPY". His black eyes were painted on and every once in a while he would bring puppy to me and say "puppy is going blind!" and I would paint the eyes back on. Still have puppy in a box somewhere! thanks for your story which prompted my visit down memory lane!!

i, like you, am trying to complete UFOs and other pressing projects. But you are making much better progress. keep up the good work!!

I'd grow it... lol

But I like quilts large to snuggle with, I hate it when my feet come poking out the bottom and get chilly. And of course, I have to share with the cats!
