Inspiration

Thank you for all the nice comments about my log cabin quilts! My inspiration for making them with the larger than common red center squares came from this quilt here - a quilt made by either my Nana or Great-Aunt. This old quilt uses 1 1/2" strips - or less - (logs finish at 1" or less) I suppose depending upon how much of a scrap of fabric was on hand. The finished quilt is on the small size - but a good size for the 3/4 sized beds that used to be so common (in between a twin and double). Close-up fabric photos for you fabric hounds out there! It is summer spread - meaning there is no batting, but every single log is quilted anyway! I had this quilt on my bed every summer as a little girl and despite years of use, it still looks brand new!

I just love the detail in quilts like this. Think about it... YOUR grandmother held it and stitched every stitch. I just marvel at all of it. My grandmother made me a quilt for my high school graduation and in my mind I can see her and my aunts sewing away on it.

Considering the size of those logs I understand why it isn't any larger! It's positively wonderful... do you think it's this quilt that influenced, or nudged you toward quilting?

What a wonderful thing to have in your family - I particularly like the pink logs in the some of the light areas.

what wonderful inspiration you had for those lovely log cabins. Such a basic quilt, with lots of warmth and charm!
Have fun riding your bikes with your son...I just love those old railroad beds to ride bikes. The closest one to us is 1 1/2 hours away, although they are working on closer ones, I can't wait!

Evelyn, this is a beautiful quilt. So good that you have heirlooms like that. I really like the idea of the large red square to start off the quilt. Those strips are tiny. And handquilting. Oh my.
