UFO Busting

I am making really good progress on my 2 Ocean Waves tops, but am taking a short break from all those triangles - just for a bit. But, rather than start anything new, I am going to try to finish this log cabin top (no triangle in sight)! Currently it measures about 60" X 60". It needs to grow some - in a "creative" moment I decided not to make the remaining log cabin blocks that I usually put around the outside edge. So, it has sat and sat for at least 3 years (at least - it is pre-Little Boy) because I am mentally stalled on any border idea. Today I decided that whatever I do is going to be better than having it sit in the back of the closet for how many more years? So, I've raided my box of 2" strips and squares and I am going to make a checkerboard border all the way around - that will make it grow very nicely! I might, might, might add a thin red inner border before adding the checkerboards, but will wait to see how the checkerboards make up first.

And - look who was sitting in my apple tree this morning. Actually, there were dozens upon dozens of these birds bombing the tree - I think they were eating the apple blossoms!

done is better than perfect... Congratulations on getting a UFO out when you needed something non-triangled. I'm sure you'll love it with a checkerboard border

I always love log cabins!!! The red border would be zingy, and then the checkerboard.
Is the bird a waxwing?

The bird may look like it's eating the blossom but is probably scoffing all the little tiny insects that hide in the flowers - checkerboard border round those log cabins sounds lovely - I'd go for the fine red border too

That is one gorgeous log cabin. I like both border ideas. Can't wait to see it done.

I also think the red border and checkerboard is a great idea. Awaiting further pictures with bated breath!

My vote also goes for the red thin inner border - it will pull together with the red squares in the centre of the log cabin blocks beautifully.

hurray for working on a ufo and sounds like you came up with great ideas for growing this top. good to take a break from triangles by switching gears that way too.

looking good so far---this deserves to see the light of day, Evelyn. Red definitely!

I would take a break from all those triangles right now too and move to something linear like the log cabins too!

Do they leave you any apples ?

I like the pale colors in your log cabin, so many times people just use muslins and beige, but I like the pastels!

I think checkerboards would be a great solution..I was thinking of sawtooth stars, but that is alot of piecing! Your idea is easier to vary the size, and easy to adjust..and definitely a narrow inner border..you're doing great!!

That's a beautiful quilt, and a beautiful bird. I understand about stalling when trying to make decisions - like the border. How about some triangles? Just kidding! I've got several quilts in that stage too. Good luck with yours.

Your scrappy log cabin is so pretty! I just love how scraps can turn out so wonderful! I can't wait to see it with the border!

And what an excellent picture of the bird! What kind is it - none like that around here where I live - that is a great picture!
